CHENNAI: Host Tamil Nadu had a rest day in the inter-State squash competition while the elimination rounds went on in full swing with few surprises in the doubles events of the National squash championships here on Monday. Tamil Nadu had reasons to feel elated over the day’s happenings in the doubles championship as its pairs, some of them Academy trainees, kept alive their hopes for a big sweep. In the inter-State phase the highlight was Services dropping a match in its 2-1 win over West Bengal in Pool ‘D’. While Shakti Singh and Vikas Jangra got the lead in the three-match tie, A. Choudhary went down to Varun Kataruka. The cheers and noise were reserved for the late evening pre-quarterfinal matches in the doubles event. The match between No. 2 seeds Naresh Kumar and Parth Sharma of Tamil Nadu against Sohail Kapur and Amjad Khan (Delhi) went at a fast pace. Smart placements
The rallies were plenty and there were some smart placements to provide variety. But the Tamil Nadu pair showed the consistency to win the points slowly but surely to emerge victorious. Earlier top seeds Saurav Ghosal and Harinder Pal Singh playing their first match after receiving a walk-over in the first round made short work of Pratik Baweja and Kapil Munjani. The day’s last match between Cyrus Poncha (incidentally the national coach) and Hari Om Tripathi representing TN and West Bengal’s Dalip Tripathi and Gautam Das went the full distance with the Tamil Nadu pair coming back from two games down to win. The results: Inter-State league: Pool ‘A’: Rajasthan ’A’ bt Uttrakhand 3-0; Pool ‘B’: Delhi ‘A’ bt UP ‘B’ 3-0; Chandigarh ’A’ bt Rajasthan ̵ 6;B’ 3-0; Pool ‘C’: Chandigarh ‘B’ lost to Delhi ‘B’ 0-3; Pool ‘D’: Services bt West Bengal 2-1; Karnataka lost to Haryana 1-2.
