Chennai: Arata Onozawa overcame the seventh-seeded Ashutosh Singh, a player ranked exactly 200 places above him, 6-4, 7-6(5) to enter the second round of the GNC-Dr. K.C.G. Verghese ITF Futures International tournament here. The first set went on serve until the 10th game when Singh was broken and Onozawa held serve in the next game to take the first set 6-4. Singh did not let the loss of the first set affect him. At 1-1, he broke his opponent’s serve and then held on till 4-3. His serve, however, capitulated at that stage and the 951st-ranked Japanese held his own to go up 5-4 on serve. Just when one thought the second set would close in the manner of the first, Singh forced a tie-break in which he took a 5-4 lead. Onozawa, however, secured the next three points to squash prospects of an exciting decider.
