PCB assures full freedom for Lawson

Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday said newly appointed coach Geoff Lawson would be given full freedom to select his support staff and implement policies in the interest of the national team.

“Lawson will have a big say in the appointment of the new support staff for the team including trainer, physiotherapist and perhaps batting and bowling coaches,” PCB Chairman Naseem Ashraf said.

Ashraf denied that the Board had already decided to attach former Test players Haroon Rasheed and Aaqib Javed as batting and bowling coaches, respectively, with Lawson.

“No decision has been taken on this and all these things would only be sorted out when Lawson reaches Pakistan next month,” he said.

The PCB Chairman, however, did not elaborate on how much say Lawson would have in team selection matters and if he would be involved in the finalisation of the squad for the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in September.

The national selectors are due to announce the final squad on August 10 after a series of trial Twenty20 matches between the probables presently attending a conditioning camp in Lahore which would be shifted to Karachi this week.

Lawson is due to reach Lahore on August 15 but PCB officials said his arrival could be delayed for a few days as he had to wrap up some details with Australian state side, New South Wales, with which he is attached with as coach. — PTI
