When I went to the railway station in the city to see off and help my son carry a computer packing into his compartment, a man looking like Train Ticket Examiner approached us and asked us to give Rs.300 for luggage charge from Madurai to Tambaram. I refused to give him the amount and went to the parcel office. They charged Rs.31.00 only after weighing the parcel. This, process took more than half an hour, besides tension. To avoid confusion on the part of commuters, the officials should display a tariff board for parcel of household items such as TV set, computer, etc. at the entrance. V. Ilangovan, Madurai. Inconvenience
Invariably the chair car trains such as the Vaigai express and the Gurvayoor express are running late, causing much inconvenience to passengers. This should be avoided on both directions. R. Pandithurai, Madurai. Depleting groundwater
This has reference to the article “Temple tanks are in deep water” in these columns on 19.07.2007. This is a timely article, as our area people are looking for sky for rain to fill the Thirumakkulam tank as the groundwater level has gone down. The wells and borewells of the surrounding area have depleted and only air comes out from the pipes. The article has come out with an alternative idea of artificially filling the tanks. The move has subdued our concern. If the suggestion is implemented and the tanks are filled with water throughout the year, it will improve the groundwater level. A. Shantha Kumar, Madurai. Avoidable accidents
Two teenaged sisters met with a fatal accident at Vasanthanagar and a building contractor who was riding a motor cycle on the Madurai-Melur road died on the spot when an unidentified vehicle knocked him down recently. Besides, two persons suffered grievous injures and died when they were run over by a State-owned bus on the Alagarkoil road. It is a sad fact that in a majority of cases the State-owned buses are to blame for the fatalities. These recurring but avoidable tragedies, may, perhaps be traced to the operation of buses, which have outlived their usefulness long ago. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai. Fitting tribute
It is a fitting tribute to the late Chief Minister K. Kamaraj for his service to the poor and down trodden, especially to the primary education, by opening number of schools in the nook corner of Tamil Nadu and introducing the midday meal scheme. The midday meal scheme was very popular in his time as he made the public contribute to their might, besides the Government. It is a welcome move that the Government has made it mandatory to celebrate the birth anniversary of Kamaraj as Educational Development Day in schools. V.S. Sankaran, Madurai.
