Villagers block the road near the accident scene for some time

BERHAMPUR: Three persons were killed and nine others were seriously injured in an accident involving a mini bus at Dakhinpur on the outskirts of the city on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred around 7.30 am. The mini bus was travelling from Digapahandi to Berhampur. Near Dakhinpur the mini bus came face to face with three cycle riders coming from the other side. One of the cycle riders suddenly lost control and fell before the bus. He was crushed to death by the minibus on the spot. But trying to save him the driver of the mini bus lost control and went off the road. Although the driver managed to save the vehicle from hitting a tree he could not save it from overturning. One passenger and the helper of the bus died on the spot. Nine passengers were seriously injured. They were carried to the MKCG medical college hospital for treatment by fire brigade.

The driver of the mini bus, Simanchal Reddy surrendered at the Sadar police station and he was arrested. He escaped unhurt. He ran to the police station to escape the wrath of villagers who were witness to the accident. The identity of the dead cycle rider and the passenger are yet to be ascertained. The dead helper of the bus was identified as Santosh Jena of Patapur village.

The villagers of Dakhinpur blocked the road near the accident spot for some time. But road blockade was lifted after circle inspector; Girija Rath pacified local people.

In recent past accidents involving mini buses have increased in Ganjam district. Most of then are caused by overspeeding and inexperienced drivers. But in the rural areas of the district mini buses are major sources of transport as passenger buses do not ply on these routes. Mini buses are only sources of connectivity between Berhampur and Chatrapur, the district headquarter of Ganjam district.
