Maharashtra to enact wakf law

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government is to enact a law for recovering wakf property acquired by others.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh announced this in the Assembly on Wednesday while replying to a debate on alleged illegal deals in wakf land. He announced that a judicial inquiry would be held.

Earlier, BJP leader Eknath Khadse sought a law cancelling all wakf land deals.

Leader of the Opposition Ramdas Kadam demanded the resignation of Wakf Minister Anees Ahmed and Wakf Board Chairman M.A. Aziz.

Mr. Kadam and Mr. Khadse, who served a notice for a short term debate on the issue, said Mr. Ahmed had alleged that Mr. Aziz indulged in illegal wakf land deals worth Rs.500 crore. Dr. Aziz had accused the Minister of appropriating wakf land for his private trusts.

Mr. Deshmukh rejected the allegation that in certain deals, his brother Dilip Deshmukh was involved and cited various verdicts that the land was not of the wakf.
