Innovators to be trained in commercialisation of technology

Their technologies will then be taken to the U.S. and European markets

NEW DELHI: A total of 14 Indian innovators were on Wednesday awarded the Innovators’ Award instituted by aerospace giant, Lockheed Martin Corporation under its India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP).

While seven innovators won the gold medal, the others won the silver medal. The gold medal winners included four from Bangalore — Amarnath Bhat of Oriental Software, Naresh Babu of Techweb Technologies, R. Gopalan of Composites Technology Park and Mahendra Pratap of Integra Microsystems.

The others are: Janak Seth of Century Pharmaceuticals of Vadodara, T.R. Rao of Mumbai, and Meera Goel of Som Extracts of Ghaziabad. The silver medal winners are: W. Amarnath, from Chennai; Mohan Kandaswamy of Oriental Aquamarine Biotech India, Coimbatore; Ashwin Bhambri of New Delhi; Joydeb Roy Chowdhury of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)’s Durgapur-based Centre for Mechanical Engineering Research Institute; Basant Kumar Gupta of Mumbai; Vinod Kalande of Akola; and Nimish Sharma of Aurora Integrated Systems, Kanpur.

Lockheed Martin Corporation had launched the IIGP in March in collaboration with the FICCI and IC Squared Institute at the University of Texas to help Indian innovators take their technologies into the U.S. and European markets.

A key feature of the programme is that it provides training to the selected innovators in the various aspects of commercialisation of their technology.

In all, 104 innovators were selected for the programme and of them 30 were short-listed on the basis of the commercialisation potential of their technology.

Advanced training

They were given advanced training in aspects such as venture financing, technology marketing and presentation skills by experts from the University of Texas.

Of these 30, fourteen were now selected and they would get further assistance in terms of professional business development.

They would also be helped by the University of Texas and FICCI to take their products to the international market.

The Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, T. Ramaswamy, presented the awards.
