Kolkata: The Jindal Steel Works (JSW) group on Wednesday kicked off their land acquisition process for the proposed Rs. 35,000 crore integrated steel plant project in Salboni in Paschim Medinipur in West Bengal, by paying cheques to land owners who had gathered there. In one of the first instances of buying land directly for a project of this size, about Rs. 35 lakhs was paid to 13 farmers for acquiring 11 acres. Sources said that this was a token start to the process which was expected to continue over the next two to three months. A camp office has been set up there in co-operation with the local administration. Several public and private sector banks including State Bank of India, UTI Bank and Punjab National Bank were also present at the site. “Facilitated by JSW, these banks are trying to counsel the villagers on investing at least a part of their compensation package in bank deposits,” JSW joint managing director and CEO Biswadip Gupta told The Hindu.
