Delhi fares better in employment rate

NEW DELHI: There are 1.64 lakh unemployed people in the Capital, who include 25,000 women, and among whom nearly 1.47 lakh or 89.27 per cent are in the age group of 15 to 29 years, a report on “Employment and Unemployment” situation in Delhi prepared by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics on the basis of a sample survey conducted during the 61st round of the National Sample Survey in 2004-2005 has stated.

Releasing the report on Tuesday, Delhi Finance and Planning Minister A. K. Walia said the survey had revealed that the rate of unemployment among males in Delhi’s urban areas was only 2.9 per cent compared to 3.1 per cent in Mumbai, 3 per cent in Chennai, 5.3 per cent in Kolkata and 3.8 per cent at the national level. In the case of women, the rate of unemployment was 4.1 per cent in Delhi compared to 5.3 per cent in Mumbai, 10.4 per cent in Kolkata, 2.3 per cent in Chennai and 6.9 per cent at the national level.

The Minister said that of the total population of 155.69 lakh and available labour force of 52.2 lakh, about 50.55 lakh people, equivalent to 32.47 per cent of the total population, were employed while 1.64 lakh persons who accounted for 1.06 per cent of the total population were unemployed in 2004-05.

The total employment according to the 60th round in 2003-04 was 48.57 lakh of the available labour force of 51.5 lakh, while unemployment was 2.94 lakh.

Therefore, 1.98 lakh people got employment during a year, he said. Of the employed persons totalling 50.55 lakh in Delhi, about 47.75 lakh are employed in the urban areas and 2.80 lakh in the rural areas.

Dr. Walia said about 20.46 lakh people (40.46 per cent of the total employed) were in the category of self-employed while about 26.66 lakh (52.74 per cent of the employed) came in the category of regular salaried class.

Since the number of self-employed persons according to the survey conducted under the 60th round in 2003-04 was 19.14 lakh and they constituted 39.41 per cent of the total employed population, he said, the percentage share of self employed persons in Delhi has shown an increase.

The survey also estimated that there were about 34.49 lakh households in Delhi with an average household size of 4.51 persons during 2004-05. The average household employment size was 1.47.
