Sonia thanks Muslim League

Special Correspondent

For extending support to UPA candidate Pratibha Patil

KOZHIKODE: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has conveyed her thanks to Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national president G.M. Banatwala for extending his party’s support to Ms. Pratibha Patil, the presidential candidate fielded by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

Ms. Gandhi expressed her appreciation for the IUML support in a letter to Mr. Banatwala.

Earlier, Mr. Banatwala had informed Ms. Gandhi of his party’s decision to support Ms. Patil, Imren Qurashi, press secretary to Mr. Banatwala, said in Kozhikode.

End of rumours

The announcement that Mr. Banatwala had informed the Congress president about the IUML’s decision to back Ms. Patil lays to rest speculations on differences within the IUML on the issue.

Remark on veils

IUML leader E. Ahamed had earlier announced support for the UPA candidate, though there were reports that some of the party leaders had reservations about the issue, especially in the wake of the reported controversial remarks made by Ms. Patil about the veil system.
