Gopal in sole lead; Kunte wins


Gopal beats Armenian Grandmaster Tigran Kotanjian

Humpy defeats Bojkov, emerges sole leader


NEW DELHI: International Master G.N. Gopal continued his dream run by beating Armenian Grandmaster Tigran Kotanjian and taking the sole lead at 3.5 points after five rounds of the Lake Sevan International chess tournament at artuni in Armenia on Tuesday.

Gopal’s victory with black pieces earned him a half-point lead over Ukraine’s IM Yuri Yovk, Poland’s GM Bartlomiej and Armenia’s GM Tigran Petrosian.

At Differdange (Luxembourg), second seed Koneru Humpy defeated Bulgaria’s Dejan Bojkov to emerge as the sole leader with 4.5 points after the fifth round of Kaupthing Open. G. Rohit reached 3.5 points after beating Germany’s Maxim Lorman.

In the Benasque Open in Benasque, Spain, youngster Abhishek Das stunned Romanian Grandmaster Mihai Suba to join R. B. Ramesh and Abhijeet Gupta at five points after six rounds.

In the Canadian Open at Ottawa, Abhijit Kunte moved to 3.5 points after scoring over Canada’s David Begoray in 30 moves. Sandipan Chanda joined Kunte following a draw with Canada’s Thomas Roussel Roozman. Twelve players lead at four points while Kunte and Chanda are part of the 32-player pack that follows the leaders.
