BREATHTAKING VIEW: People flock to the Srisailam Dam after the gates were lifted on Sunday.
KURNOOL: Srisailam dam turned into a popular tourist spot after the flood discharge on Saturday night. The dam site teemed with tourists on Sunday, as it happened a weekend holiday.
The dam authorities lifted seven flood gates to a height of 14 ft to release 2.40 lakh cusecs. The dam was full this year much early thanks to the torrential rains last a fortnight in the catchment. The dam is likely to handle a huge flood this year during active monsoon period, which ends in October.
The panoramic sight has caught the imagination of viewers.
The placid water just behind the concrete structure took a violent fall after its release through giant vents. Each vent is designed to discharge one lakh cusecs if lifted to the full level.
The violent fall of huge water columns into the dam bucket, 400 feet below, created a spectacular view resembling a snake hood. While the view feasted the eye, the roaring noise gave the perfect background music.
People of all ages and sections including the security personnel involved in anti-naxal operations relaxed staring at the man-made wonder surrounded by green hills.
