Bauxite mining in tribal belt

The Government should reconsider the issue of allowing bauxite mining in the tribal belt. The pristine glory of the hills of Araku should not be destroyed. Any mining activity is hazardous from biological point of view, as any dormant virus may “see the light of the day” and spread havoc on humanity. About 50 million people died of viral sickness in 1918. Moreover, aluminium which is the metal obtained from the bauxite ore, is known to cause dementia in human beings, which is a neurological disorder. Housewives would do well not to use aluminium vessels for heavy duty cooking

The think tanks in Congress in the south in general and Andhra Pradesh in particular, should rise to the occasion and put their foot down and do the needful.

Concession for senior citizens

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav claims that his biggest achievement was reduction in fares when the recommendations were in favour of hike.

But the fact remains the senior citizens have repeatedly requested him to enhance the rate of concession to 50 per cent from the present 30 per cent without response. The aged are physically weak and have no earning capacity. Hence they need subsidy/support in all matters.

RBI should intervene

It is shocking that a senior citizen SB account holder of ICICI Bank was slapped a penalty of Rs.2,735 for the simple reason that he did not operate his account of Rs.5,000. Behind the façade of well-displayed air-conditioned counters in these banks, lay hidden a plethora of ruthless and inhuman rules and practices not in tune with civilised society.

Neither the Indian Banks Association’s model code nor RBI’s fair practices code is cared and respected. Banking Ombudsman and RBI should intervene to discipline these banks.

Dangerous stretch

The Mahatma Junction, the junction where the statue of Mahatma Gandhi is situated opposite the old entrance gate of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), poses a serious threat to the smooth traffic and turns to be a cause of accidents. The area has become considerably wide with the formation of a new road leading to the LIC Building Road.

The junction gives a decent and elevated look but the road margins, road dividers are not provided yet, giving large scope for the vehicle riders and pedestrians to move as they wish. I request the GVMC and Traffic police authorities to take the necessary steps to prevent accidents at the spot.

Tanks crying for attention

Kakinada is known for its cleanliness before getting corporation status. But now things are changing.

There are many tanks in the city like Balaji cheruvu, Pindala cheruvu, Bhogamdani cheruvu, Santha cheruvu. People residing in the vicinity of tanks are victims of mosquito menace.

I appeal to the civic authorities to take up periodical cleaning of the tanks and also beautification of the tanks.
