Adi Dravidar committee reviews welfare measures

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State Adi Dravidar Welfare Committee on Thursday reviewed the progress of various welfare measures initiated by the Government for the benefit of the Adi Dravida community in the State.

Addressing the meeting, Adi Dravida Welfare Minister Tamilarasi said during the last financial year, the State had allotted Rs. 641.54 crore for various welfare schemes for the “depressed” class, 97 per cent of which had been utilised.

There had been a substantial increase in the pass percentage of the community students both in the tenth and plus two examinations.

The Department had spent Rs. 10 crore last year for undertaking repair works in Adi Dravida hostels.

The Minister wanted the department officials to maintain the same tempo in the current financial year also by implementing the welfare measures announced by the Government.

District-level meetings

Committee members suggested district level meetings should be held periodically to monitor the progress of the welfare schemes. They wanted the department officials to take necessary steps to prevent the delay in the issue of free house site pattas and community certificates to the SC/ST students.

Members complained that nationalised banks were taking undue time in releasing loans to the community people recommended by TAHDCO.

Backlog vacancies

They wanted the Government to fill the backlog vacancies in various departments which were reserved for the community.

The Chief Secretary, Secretary and Director of Adi Dravida Welfare Departments and TAHDCO Managing Director participated in the meeting.
