It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. The Terms of Reference for the Readers’ Editor are on www.thehindu.com >>In a report “Honda Cars breaks ground for second plant in India” (July 2, 2007), the name of Rajasthan Chief Secretary D.C. Samant was incorrectly given as D.C. Sawant in the caption of the accompanying photograp h. >>Referring to an article “How the President of India is elected” (June 14, 2007), and in the accompanying KBK Infographic, the dates of polling of Presidential elections on which R Venkataraman and S.D. Sharma were elected were given as July 13, 1987, and July 13, 1992, respectively. A reader said that in the compendium “India Decides –– Elections 1952-1995” compiled by David Butler, Ashok Lahiri and Prannoy Roy (published in 1995) the dates were given as September 7, 1987, and July 13, 1992, respectively (page 60). On the other hand, “India –– A Reference Annual for 2001” (Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting) gave the beginning of their tenures as July 25, 1987 and July 25, 1992, respectively (p. 803). If R. Venkataraman was sworn in on July 25, 1987, the poll date could not have been September 7, as given in “India Decides”. Vijay Kumar, Managing Editor, KBK Newsgraphics Network, clarifies that the information in the infographic was based on the booklet issued by the Election Commission of India titled “Election to the Office of The President of India 2007”. Since the Constitution vests the superintendence, direction and control of the election to the office of the President of India in the Election Commission of India, it is the most authentic source for such information. The booklet has also been posted on the Election Commission of India’s website. The date of election of R. Venkataraman was July 13, 1987, and he assumed office on July 25, 1987. The date of election of S.D. Sharma was July 13, 1992, and he assumed office on July 25, 1992. >>A sentence in a report “‘Reward for fulfilling promises’” (June 30, 2007) was: “On [Election] Commission’s counsel seeking a clarification on the High Court order directing prosecution of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa, for making false declarations while filing nominations from four constituencies in the 2002 Assembly polls, Mr. Karunanidhi said one needed to enquire what the primary reason was fo r counsel to do this.” It should have been the 2001 Assembly polls. (It was an editing error, and in the Chennai city edition.) >>A report “Indians look to finish in style” (“Sport”, July 1, 2007) stated that it took a six from Yuvraj off Kallis to defeat South Africa. Dinesh Karthik hit the winning run, a single off the last over bowled by Kallis. >>The seventh paragraph in a report “Tendulkar reaches a landmark” (“Sport”, June 30, 2007) stated that India won by four wickets with five balls remaining to tie the series. It should have been India w on by six wickets. >>A report “Windies posts win” (“Sport”, June 30, 2007) stated that Paul Collingwood hit 80 off 40 balls, while the scoreboard showed Collingwood as having hit 79 off 41 balls. The scoreboard is right.
