Pilot project launched in Malappuram

MALAPPURAM: The State Information Technology (IT) Mission has begun giving free computer training to Government employees. Each of the five lakh Government staff in the State will get 40 hours of computer training over three years. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan launched the training programme here on Sunday.

About 2,000 police officers in Malappuram district will get training in the first phase of the programme, being conducted here in association with Akshaya.

The pilot phase of training will cover 38,000 Government employees working in different departments in Malappuram district.

As much as Rs.1.69 crore has already been transferred to Akshaya in Malappuram for the mega training project under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGAP).

This will be the single largest computer training programme in a district for Government employees in the country, said K. Anvar Sadath, Director of Akshaya.

Computer training has been made mandatory for police officers in view of Malappuram becoming an e-district.

It will soon be made mandatory for other Government employees in Malappuram. The training is estimated to cost the Government Rs.450 per employee.

The training programme will comprise a 30-hour e-Vidya package developed by the Kerala State IT Mission and a 10-hour Internet learning package.

Mr. Sadath said that the course would cover operating system, word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, computer hardware, Internet and Malayalam typing.

IT Mission officials said that police personnel were chosen for the initial phase of training because 57 police stations in Malappuram were already connected through the wireless broadband Internet network of Akshaya. This is currently the largest such network of police stations in the country.

Besides, web-based facilities like passport verification status report and online grievances submission have already been introduced in Malappuram.

The District Police Office here will soon introduce cyber crime detection tools.

The training will be decentralized, said Mr. Sadath.

Officers can undergo training at the nearest Akshaya centres even after office hours and on holidays.

Launching the programme at the office of the Superintendent of Police here, the Home Minister said that the police force would be modernized with the help of Akshaya. The ultimate aim, the Minister said, was to fulfil the concept of e-policing in the State.

Inspector-General of Police P. Vijayanand, Superintendent of Police P. Vijayan, Akshaya Director K. Anvar Sadath, and Akshaya district secretary M. Salim were among those who spoke at the function.
