Stop supplying arms to Sri Lanka: MDMK

Special Correspondent

Vaiko

VILLUPURAM: Reiterating its support to the Sri Lankan Tamils’ struggle, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Saturday urged the Centre to stop supplying arms and ammunition to the Sri Lankan Government and get back sophisticated radars supplied to the island nation.

The regional meeting of the MDMK held here with general secretary Vaiko in the chair, in a resolution said the Sri Lankan Government was bent upon decimating the Tamils by bombing civilian areas.

The motive became apparent when it recently attempted to flush out Tamils from Colombo.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse was indulging in arm-twisting tactics by saying that if India refused to supply arms, it would procure armaments from China and Pakistan.

The MDMK said India should not be hoodwinked by such tantrums. Instead of condemning the Sri Lankan Government for its inhuman actions against the Tamils, India was assisting the Sri Lankan military. This had shocked Tamils the world over.

In another resolution the MDMK urged the Centre to permit transhipment of essentials, medicines and milk powder collected through the Tamilaga Desiya Iyakkam to Sri Lanka.

The party said the Centre should desist from carrying out joint patrolling with the Sri Lankan Navy because the latter had ruthlessly shot dead at least 500 fishermen from Tamil Nadu in the past three decades.

If India fell into the trap of joint patrolling, it would be tantamount to doing grave injustice to Sri Lankan Tamils.

Water dispute

The meeting suggested setting up of a river water authority to resolve the inter-State water disputes. Tamil Nadu was caught in a tangle with the neighbouring States in sharing the waters of the Cauvery, the Mullaperiyar and the Palar.
