Unity among youth vital for nation’s growth: Minister

Powerful advice: The Minister for Environment and Forest, S. Regupathy addressing NSS volunteers in Pudukottai on Saturday.

PUDUKOTTAI: Serving the nation must be the primary objective of the youth, the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, S. Regupathy has said.

Speaking at the valediction of the seven-day National Integration camp for NSS volunteers drawn from various states, sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, at J.J. College of Arts and Science, here, on Saturday he underlined the importance of maintaining unity among the youth for the overall growth of the country. Youngsters should shun inhibitions and face future challenges with total confidence.

The Registrar, Bharthidasan University, V .Radhakrishnan in his presidential address said that youth are the backbone of the nation. “The youth of India had done the nation proud by their all round performance, skill, knowledge and management acumen. It is their duty to make the country achieve laurels in all spheres.”

The Head and Youth officer, NSS Regional centre, Chennai, M. Rajamony felicitated the participants, officers and the organisers of the Camp and administered the satbhavana pledge of tolerance, understanding to them.

C. Hariramjothi, Lecturer, Department of English, J. J. College of Arts and Science, detailed on the various activities undertaken during the camp.

The principal of the College, J. Parasuraman and the NIC and NSS programme coordinator, Bharathidasan University, K. Kanagaraju also spoke.

A total of 100 NSS volunteers and officers from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry, participated in the camp. The Tamil Nadu contingent was represented by the volunteers of the NSS units of Bharathidasan and Madurai Kamaraj universities.

Field visits

The participants during the camp period also made field visits to Kumaramalai, Kudumiyanmalai, Sithannavasal and Thanjavur Big Temple. About 55 volunteers donated blood during a special blood donation camp and a team of doctors from the Blood Bank of the Government Headquarters Hospital, Pudukottai, conducted the camp.

They also took part in the national integration rally, which was flagged off by the Superintendent of Police, Kapil Saratkar.

Chattisgarh won the overall best team title and the award was given away by the Union Minister.
