Pride and glory: Students taking out a rally in support of Taj Mahal in Vijayawada.

VIJAYAWADA: It was not short and frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of the gritty girls who rallied with a firmness that evoked awe.

Marching from the premises of the Sri Siddhartha Mahila Junior Kalasala, the girls, led by their teachers, headed to the PWD Grounds holding placards that goaded people to vote for Taj Mahal as one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’. ‘Taj, the Power of Beauty’ read a placard, while another described it as a ‘tender elegy in marble’. Unmindful of the drizzle that drenched some of them completely, the girls preferred to soak themselves into the passion of the moment by becoming part of a nation-wide patriotic campaign.

Voting essential

“Even a downpour would not have deterred us from taking up this awareness rally. We want people to realise the importance of their vote and save the monument from slipping into oblivion,” said Udaya Kumari, a senior Intermediate student of the college.

Wiping her wet face with her dupatta, K. Naga Jyothi said: “Taj is the pride of our country. Many people are not even aware of the rescheduling of the Seven Wonders of the World. The rally mainly aims at educating that section,” she said.

With roughly a week’s time left for the announcement of the final list of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the ‘Vote for Taj’ campaign is moving at a frenzied pace across the country.

The Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala is the first educational institution in the city to take up the awareness campaign. “In countries like China, the government has extended free SMS and Internet accessibility to its citizens to cast their votes and preserve the status of their monument-

The Great Wall of China. Since we do not have any such thing happening here, the least we can do is to motivate people around us to vote for the Taj,” said college principal K. Visala.

Ms. Visala appealed to people to SMS the word TAJ to 4567 or call landline number 1255545 to register their vote. To vote online, one must log on to http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php?id=409.
