Chennai enters quarterfinals

Theni: Chennai, down by a 11th minute strike by Srikanth, bounced back to register a 3-1 win over Nilgiris and entered the quarterfinals of the 23rd Tamil Nadu State sub-junior inter-district football championship, organised by the Theni District Football Association, here on Thursday.

After Nilgiris went ahead, Ashokan found the equaliser in the 22nd minute. Chennai went on to score two more goals through Ranjith (30th) and Ashokan again (57th).

In the other pre-quarterfinal matches, Tiruchi trounced Ramanathapuram 4-0, Kancheepuram edged past Erode through a solitary goal and Dindigul prevailed over Tuticorin 4-2, via the tie-breaker, after the teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time.

The results (pre-quarterfinals): Chennai 3 (Ashokan 2, Ranjith) bt Nilgiris 1 (Srikanth); Tiruchi 4 (Sureshkumar, Santhosh 2, Hari Shanmugasundaram) bt Ramanathapuram 0; Kancheepuram 1 (A. Justin) bt Erode 0; Dindigul 4 (Mohanraj, Sath eesh Kumar, Nagaraj, Rajamani) bt Tuticorin 2 (Jesuvadian, A. Sebastin), via tie-breaker.

Sankar HSS triumphs

At Tirunelveli, Sankar Higher Secondary School lifted the ICL Trophy, defeating St. Thomas High School by 40 runs, in the final of the third annual Dstrict-level schools cricket tournament, organised by TDCA, at the Sankar School ground, Sankarnagar, on Thursday.

Special Awards: Batsman: Jebin Nalsingh (Sankar HSS); Bowler: Sudalaimuthu (St. Thomas HSS); All-rounder: Imran Khan (Sankar HSS).

The scores: Sankar HSS 118 in 27 overs (Jack Joel three for 23) bt St. Thomas HS 78 in 23.3 overs (Esakkimuthu four for 14, Imran Khan three for 17).

Semifinalists spotted

American College Higher Secondary School, St. Britto HSS, Mangayarkarasi HSS and TVS HSS entered the semifinals of the District-level inter-school volleyball tournament for boys, organised by the Madurai YMCA, at TVS HSS ground, Madurai, on Thursday.

Persis reigns supreme

At Madurai, Persis of Temple City Badminton Academy won six titles (women’s singles and doubles, girls’ under-19 singles and doubles and under-16 singles and doubles) in the Madurai District Badminton Championship, which concluded at MGR Race Course stadium recently.
