Decision on President’s salary deferred

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday discussed the issue of hike in the salaries of the President and the Vice-President. But, it deferred a decision to incorporate the salary of Governors also in the Bill meant for the two top constitutional posts.

Union Minister and Cabinet spokesperson Priyaranjan Dasmunsi told newspersons that the Cabinet would take up the matter before the monsoon session of Parliament. The proposal was to double the salary of the President from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh and that of the Vice-President from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 85,000.

Mr. Dasmunsi noted that a conference of Governors had suggested an increase in the Governor’s salary. Hence, it was decided to have a single Bill dealing with the salaries of the President, the Vice-President and the Governors.
