VADODARA: Texan Aces, the Indian team, consisting of G. Venkatesh, J.M. Shah, K. Krishnakumar, P. Sridharan, Badal Das and Sumit Mukherjee, succumbed in the final to the Franco-Israeli team of Thomas Bessis, Michel Bessis, Ron Patchtman and Eldad Ginossar by a margin of 26 IMPs on Wednesday, at the European Open bridge championships at Antalya. The first segment (16 boards) saw the Indians trail 17-25 although they had several opportunities to reverse that lead. Nearly four days of back-to-the-wall fighting seem to have taken the steam out of the Indians who had a disastrous second segment, losing a further 53 IMPs. It was too much to expect a team to recover from a 61 IMP deficit in the last segment of 16 boards. The Indians did not give up though and with just two boards to go, the lead had been reduced to a mere 14 IMPs. But in the penultimate 47th board, the Franco-Israeli team gained 12 IMPs to seal the fate of the Indians.
