Bush ordered my death: Castro

HAVANA: Cuban leader Fidel Castro has accused U.S. President George W. Bush of “authorising and ordering” an attempt on his life.

Mr. Castro’s essay noted that U.S. President Gerald Ford signed an order banning official assassinations, and said he didn’t believe that Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton ever tried to have him killed. But Mr. Castro said Mr. Bush had other ideas. “I’m not the first, nor will I be the last, whom Bush has ordered to be deprived of life,” Mr. Castro wrote.

In an essay signed on Sunday afternoon and published Monday in state media, Mr. Castro wrote.

“Why did I say one day in a reflection that Bush authorised or ordered my death? This phrase can seem ambiguous and imprecise.

Perhaps it would be more exact, although even more confusing, to say that he authorised it and ordered it.” — AP
