Dell computers from Chennai unit soon

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Dell Computers will roll out its first machine from its Sriperumbudur plant near Chennai in the next couple of months.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Romi Malhotra, Managing Director of Dell International Services, India, said the company was very much on target in its commitment to achieving the billion-dollar mark in revenue.

Asserting that the production unit in Chennai would certainly bring down the cost of computers, he said the benefit would be passed on to customers. The installed capacity of the Chennai unit was four lakh units a year with enough scope for expansion.

The company’s revenues, which were pegged at $500 million last year, were growing at 70 per cent (taking Chennai facility also into consideration).

Core area

The company had identified BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) segment as a core area and was working out avenues to promote its business in that realm.

The company, which had so far been into direct online selling of its products, was now looking at tying up with a chain of retail stores to sell the product across India. It had tied up with Wal-Mart in the U.S. for retailing its product. It was yet to be seen as to how it would take off in other geographies also, said Mr. Malhotra.

To raise headcount

He said the company was concentrating on the development of its Gurgaon centre and proposed to increase the headcount in its international services centres in India from 14,000 to 20,000.

The company, as part of corporate social responsibility, launched its second computer centre for the benefit of underprivileged students at Habsiguda in Hyderabad, he said. The first centre has been functioning at Nampally since April 2006.
