Eastbourne: Amelie Mauresmo is healthy and ready to defend her Wimbledon title. The fourth-ranked Frenchwoman, who injured her groin and lost in the third round at the French Open, said yesterday she is feeling better. Trouble recovering
“I had some trouble recovering from the injury I got in Paris, but I’m feeling much better now and really looking forward to playing some matches on grass,” Mauresmo said at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Eastbourne. “I did not touch the racket for about 10 days and I only started to play again a week ago.” Mauresmo, who beat top-ranked Justine Henin in 2006 final at Wimbledon, said she considered pulling out of the Grand Slam tournament last year after losing in the first round at Eastbourne. “I remember last year after I lost here in Eastbourne how I was mentally,” Mauresmo said. Much better now
“I almost thought there’s no point for me to go to Wimbledon if I play this way, so I’m feeling much better now.” “But it does not mean that everything is going to happen just the same. You still have that white page that you have to write the history on,” she said. Despite winning her first Grand Slam title at the 2006 Australian Open, Mauresmo considers her Wimbledon victory a great achievement. — AP
