Olympic Games
HYDERABAD: For someone who is gunning for a berth in the Beijing Olympics in the air-rifle category, the 16-year-old Manda Snigdha is delighted at being named as one of the two sportspersons from India (the other being the 14-year-old Jharkhand archer Mangal Ho) and 14 from all over the world, to be given the annual scholarship of $10,000 per annum till 2012 by the London-based G4 Securicours. Speaking to The Hindu here, Snigdha, a silver medallist at the National junior shooting championship, felt that being named as one of the 14 from across the world by the G4 group is itself an honour and a big source of inspiration. “It could not have come at a more appropriate time,” she remarked. Snigdha, an intermediate student at the Arora College in the City, had already represented India in the international events in Hungary (finished fourth), Germany (seventh) and the Czech Republic. “I am really keen to come up with a creditable performance in the Asian championship to book the quota place in my category for the Beijing Olympics,” she said. Snigdha is also pleased with the lifetime free offer of physical conditioning programme by Dinaaz Fitness Centre in Hyderabad. In the next few days she will leave for Delhi to join the National camp and she hopes to be in the right frame of mind to realise her dream of an Olympic quota place.
