“87 LTTE cadres killed in battles”
B. Muralidhar Reddy
COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka military on Wednesday claimed that at least 87 cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were killed in battles in the north and east in the last 24 hours.
The Navy claimed to have destroyed several boats of the Sea Tigers and killed at least 40 cadres in a battle off Vettilaikerni on Tuesday night. It said the battle began at 4.30 p.m. as patrolmen detected four clusters of LTTE boats headed for Point Pedro from Kadaikadu, south of Vettilaikerni.
Three LTTE boats were completely destroyed while two others were damaged in a confrontation off Point Pedro.
Altogether, five LTTE boats were completely destroyed and nine others disabled. “By intercepting the LTTE communication channel, it is known that at least 40 cadres were killed and many others sustained injuries.”
Military Spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe said seven LTTE camps — four last week and three on Tuesday — were destroyed in the Thoppigala area. He claimed that 30 bodies of Tigers were found, along with arms and ammunition, after Tuesday’s attack. Two soldiers were wounded. “Also, in Kalkuda and Thrikonamadu, six terrorists were killed,” he told a news conference.
In another confrontation, 11 LTTE cadres were killed in Periya Thampane and Villattikulam, said Brig. Samarasinghe. He accused the Tigers of using religious places as hideouts.
