TIRUCHI: The district administration has decided to intensify fogging operations as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of chikungunya that has been reported in Kerala.

The official machinery here has decided to strengthen surveillance at Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and in hospitals to ascertain if there was an unusual inflow of patients with complaints of high fever, body and joint pain. Though no case of chikungunya was reported from anywhere in the district till now, the village panchayats have been instructed to ensure that there was water logging in their areas to prevent breeding of mosquitoes, officials said. Health Department sources said that enumeration of fever cases from the PHCs, Government Hospitals and private nursing homes was being done on a daily basis since May to compare it with the last year’s trend and ascertain if there was any increase in the number of fever cases. Official sources said that the process of appointing 10 field workers for each panchayat union in the district was in progress to carry out multiple activities, including enlisting of mosquito breeding sources and reduction of such sources by removing discarded materials.

Villages under vigil

A senior official said that the Health Department was also monitoring the density of mosquitoes in villages, informing that surveillance was being maintained in Thathiangerpet and Uppiliapuram areas where more number of people reported of high fever and joint pain last time.

In the meantime, the Tiruchi Corporation commenced fogging operations in all wards from Wednesday. Sanitary workers carried out fogging operations in compartments of the Ernakulam–Tiruchi Tea Garden Express when the train arrived Tiruchi Junction on Wednesday morning.
