Anirban Lahiri in the van

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: An excellent opening round studded with two eagles, three birdies and just the one bogey saw local youngster Anirban Lahiri take a two-stroke lead over Delhi's Saurabh Bahuguna in the opening round of the LG-Eagleton Amateur Golf tournament here on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka's Mithun Pereria and H.S. Kang are in the third spot, three behind Lahiri.

Lahiri began sedately on the modified Eagleton course with three pars in a row. A birdie on the fourth was the harbinger of good things to come and the eagle on the sixth, where he chipped into the cup from the edge of the green, kept the good work going.

Superb eagle

After the turn Lahiri followed up the birdie on the 10th with another superb eagle on the 13th after his second shot had landed six inches from the pin.

A couple of missed birdie putts were no deterrent to Lahiri who was playing on his home course. Only once did he falter failing to save par on the 16th.

The sole blemish was quickly obliterated with another birdie on the 17th to set him up as the leader on day one with a 66.

Bahuguna too revelled on the fairly easy pin positions of the first round. Five birdies, three off the putter, came on holes 3,12,16,17 and 18. Bahuguna dropped a shot on the eighth.

Blazing start

Pereira, playing on the course for the first time, had a blazing start with four birdies on the front nine. On the back nine though Pereira faltered to drop shots twice and logged only one birdie to play to three-under 69.

The scores: 66 Anirban Lahiri, 68 Saurabh Bahuguna, 69 Mithun Pereira, 70 Moin Malak, 71 K Prabagaran, Chikkarangappa,Raj Randhawa and Vikram Rana.
