Paramasivam stuns Abhijeet

Principal Correspondent

DINDIGUL: By his own admission, M. Paramasivam is more of a coach than a player and is only making his debut at the National `B' chess, at the age of 34. The man from Aruppukottai (which is not too far away from here), couldn't have hoped for a better beginning. After holding the third seed D.P. Singh to a draw in the opening round, he shocked the top seed Abhijeet Gupta in the second round at the PSNA College of Engineering and Technology here on Tuesday.

Paramasivam then held S. Rengarajan, also rated higher than him, in the third round in the afternoon.

The third round saw the seventh seed K. Ratnakaran, the Kozhikode-based Railways player, playing on the top board, with the higher seeds failing to live up to their billings so far. He didn't do badly, beating Atanu Lahiri to move into the joint lead, with three full points, along with 14 others.

Playing from the white side of an Italian Game, he won in 29 moves, not without some help from Black, who sacrificed a bishop for a couple of pawns but overlooked a knight move from his opponent for which he had no good enough answer.
