Heat leaves Delhi sizzling

High minimum temperature adds to the discomfort

NEW DELHI: A day after the Capital sizzled at 44.9 degrees Celsius, the mercury on Sunday came down by nearly a degree.

While the mercury soared, what added to the discomfort of the citizens was the high minimum temperature. While Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius, at Palam it stood at 33.6 degrees Celsius. At Safdarjung, it was five degrees above the normal, while at Palam the minimum temperature was six degrees above normal. The maximum temperature 44 degrees Celsius recorded at Safdarjung was four degrees above normal and at Palam the maximum temperature was four degrees above normal.

According to the Meteorological Department, Monday is likely to be hot and humid. But the maximum temperature is expected to come down and hover around 42 degrees Celsius. There is also the likelihood of dust storms in some areas of the Capital.

Meanwhile, Sunday began on a sultry note with air-conditioners and coolers working overtime as most chose to remain indoors.

In some areas like Najafgarh in South-West Delhi, people came out on the streets to protest against the deteriorating power and water situation. They threatened to block the road, but were dissuaded by the police.

At Indira Gandhi International Airport, flight operations remained normal. The operations were affected on Saturday evening as the temperature threatened to touch the 50 degrees Celsius mark.
