His wife said Maninder returned home late at night and on not getting a response to his repeated knocks at the door, went to the balcony. According to her, Maninder banged the glass window hard to wake up the family members, but the glass shattered inflicting cuts on his wrists.

`Rash driver' manages traffic

NEW DELHI: Deepak Gupta, who was recently directed by a Patiala House court here to regulate traffic for 10 days as punishment for rash driving under the influence of alcohol and without a licence, was deployed at Nehru Place intersection for three-and-half hours on Sunday.

As directed by Metropolitan Magistrate Gautam Manan on June 5, Deepak presented himself before the in-charge of Kalkaji circle at 10 a.m. and managed traffic at the intersection near Paras Cinema. "I am learning traffic rules. I have now realised what a big mistake I committed and will never repeat it. I will abide by the instructions of the court," said Deepak. He remained on "duty" till 1-30 p.m.

Senior police officers will decide where to deploy Deepak on Monday as part of his punishment.

Deepak was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and without a licence after the Santro car driven by him overturned under Mayapuri flyover on February 16. He confessed to his crime before the court and urged for leniency considering that it was his first offence.

The court slapped a fine of Rs. 3,000 on Deepak and directed him to regulate traffic at Kalkaji circle from 10 days beginning Sunday.
