CHENNAI: Paterson Cancer Center inaugurated its free cancer awareness programme on Sunday with Sri Lankan cricket team captain Mahela Jayawardene. He spent a few minutes with cancer survivors at the centre in Vijaya Health Centre at Vadapalani. Mr. Jayawardene was introduced to Shanthi Seetharaman (51) who underwent chemotherapy four times over a period of six months for breast cancer. "She did not lose hair despite the treatment," said S. Vijayaraghavan, managing director of the centre. The centre conducts free detection and education programmes for the public, schoolchildren and doctors. This year, the centre plans to screen candidates for breast, head and neck cancers. Registration will be held at the centre. As part of its awareness programme, on June 17, bowler Sreesanth will talk to schoolchildren about cancer. The event will have students from 14 private schools in Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Parangipettai, Panrutti and Neyveli. Each school will send 20 students studying in classes X - XII. The centre will celebrate its fourth year on June 19.
