TAMBARAM : Even as residents of Tambaram and nearby places in the southern suburbs of Chennai were harbouring fears of an extended `agni nakshatram' this year, sharp showers brought pleasant relief on Sunday evening.

The showers lasted nearly 30 minutes in Tambaram, Chromepet and Pallavaram helped in bringing down the soaring mercury levels on Sunday. Though it has been about a fortnight since the `agni nakshatram' period, there was no respite from the scorching heat of the summer.

The Sunday evening showers were accompanied by overcast conditions and water logging in some stretches on roads like Velachery Main Road and Grand Southern Trunk Road. Officials here said the rainfall level was not measured, but for residents, it was enough to give them immense relief from the heat wave conditions.
