Man held for impersonation

TAMBARAM: A 50-year-old man, who posed as a railway ticket examiner and tried to take away the mobile phone of youth at the Tambaram railway station has been arrested on charges of impersonation.

According to the police, Vijay Kumar of Officers Colony in Tirukazhukundram, an employee with a private firm in Tambaram, had on Friday left home within hours of reaching office, as he was unwell. After getting permission, he reached the Tambaram station to take a train to his house in Chengalpattu. When he took the foot-over-bridge to reach the platform, the accused posing as a ticket examiner intercepted him. The `officer' asked him to show the ticket. Vijay Kumar told him that he was on his way to buy a ticket.

The `officer' informed the youth that he was being booked for `ticketless travel' and asked him to pay the penalty.

The youth broke down and requested the man to spare him. However, the accused did not relent and snatched the mobile phone from him. An official of the Southern Railway took note of the incident.

The two were taken to Government Railway Police station in Tambaram. It transpired that the accused, Radhakrishnan, hailing from Madurai, had cheated unsuspecting passengers in the past.
