New Delhi: India's initiative to help promote higher education in African countries has taken concrete shape with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launching its MBA programme in Ethiopia. IGNOU has launched the course as part of the Pan-African E-network project announced by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam during his visit to Johannesburg in 2005. "We have launched the programme as a pilot project in Addis Ababa. The programme is being offered through the tele-communication mode via an under-sea cable," IGNOU Vice-Chancellor Rajashekharan Pillai told PTI. The under-sea cable has been provided by Tele-communication Consultants India Ltd (TCIL). The course, launched two months ago, is being offered free of cost to 40 students. "As part of the project, we are testing the technology and observing the response to the course. We will start similar programmes in 53 countries that are part of the African Union," Pillai said. The Indian Government had offered the African Union help in tele-education and tele-medicine capacity building and IGNOU was selected as the nodal agency for tele-education. Five other institutes, including Delhi University, IISC Bangalore and University of Madras, are partners in this project. -- PTI
