CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Power Engineer's Organisation has urged the State Government to ensure the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board remain a public sector entity, and has said under no circumstances, should it be privatised. The resolution was passed at the second State Conference held recently. In a release, organisation general secretary T. Arivalgan said the conference appealed to the Government not to commercialise the power sector, as it would affect the people, besides causing the agriculture sector to collapse. The conference also called for stringent action against power theft and efforts to minimise transmission loss. It demanded that 4,500 vacancies for the post of engineers be filled, new power stations be established and licences granted to private sector operators for setting up power stations with natural gas be reviewed. To ensure that the Board purchased standard machinery and spare parts, a technical audit committee had been constituted. The absence of which could lead to loss of crore of rupees, Mr. Arivalagan said.
