Government should decide on power sub-station: VC

Staff Reporter

Agreement was signed in 1999, says Ranganath

  • Sub-station has been planned at Prasanna Kumar Block, adjacent to Central College grounds
  • Representations in this regard have been received from people

Bangalore: The agreement between Bangalore University and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) to set up a transmission sub-station on the Central College grounds was signed in 1999, said H.A. Ranganath, Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University.

"The Bangalore University Syndicate approved it then and Rs. 15 lakh was also transferred to the university account. We have not returned the amount. The class IV quarters, that are to be demolished, will be constructed on the Jnana Bharati campus," he said.

The sub-station will come up at the Prasanna Kumar Block, adjacent to the Central College grounds.

"We have received representations from various organisations. We will forward it to the Government. I will not say if the sub-station will come up. That is for the Government to decide," the Vice-Chancellor said.

He also said that the station was proposed to be set up on 35 m X 50 m land at Prasanna Kumar Block. "The market value is around Rs. 8 crore. We have asked KPTCL to build the staff quarters, a health centre, make part payment towards the construction of the women's hostel and undertake repairs for any damages that may occur when the station is being set up," he added.

    Disaffiliation

The Syndicate that met on Saturday also discussed the issue of disaffiliation of colleges that had failed to meet certain standards set by the university.

"We discussed the issue with regard to the eight colleges. Six colleges have replied. We have asked them to fulfil all the criteria required by next year."

Prof. Ranganath said that Shekhar College of Science and Management, Bannerghatta Road, and Ambigara Chowdaiah College of Education, Kavalbyrasandra, had not replied. "These colleges should not make any new admissions. The Syndicate decided to send reminders to both the colleges," he pointed out.

    Regularisation

As per the Supreme Court order, the university would regularise the services of temporary workers who have completed 10 years or more. Of the 190 temporary workers in the university, the services of 85 would be regularised next month, Prof. Ranganath said.

The multiple-choice questions would probably be introduced from the 2008-09 academic year.

"We had taken a decision in this regard long ago. Discussions are going on. The question bank is being prepared. We are not going to take hasty decisions as the future of the students is at stake. Until we perfect the system, we will not implement it," he added.

He also said that the punishment given to students found indulging in malpractices had been ratified by the Syndicate.

As many as 72 had been debarred from taking the examination for one year. The punishment of 24 students, who were caught in May, is in varying degrees. "The severity of the punishment is varied. The results of some students will be withheld, some will not be allowed to take the examination and a few have been debarred."

Registrar (Evaluation) Radhakrishna Rao Madankar had proposed to fix CCTVs at the evaluation centre. "We have asked him to give a written proposal, which will later be put before the Finance Committee," he said.

He also said that the priority was to first announce the sixth semester results on time. "The evaluation work began on June 8. With the PGCET counselling due to start, we want to announced the results soon," he added.
