Schools' plea: hearing put off to June 11

Staff Reporter

  • The Government says it is agreeable on court's suggestions on voluntary scheme for schools
  • Primary schools will have to either comply or face the music, says a single judge

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday adjourned to Monday further hearing on appeals by the Karnataka Unaided School Managements' Association (KUSMA) and other schools that challenged the order directing them to file affidavits undertaking to impart education in the medium of instruction in which they had been permitted to operate.

When the matter came up, some schools sought more time and a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice B.S. Patil adjourned the cases to Monday.

Earlier, the State Government informed the Bench that it was agreeable to the court's suggestion on the voluntary scheme for primary schools.

The court on Thursday indicated that since the scheme was voluntary and since a majority of the members of KUSMA had not opted for it, the Bench would quash all interim orders relating to the scheme.

The government advocate said only some of the schools had challenged the voluntary scheme formulated by the Government under which they were expected to pay a penalty before being accorded recognition.

In a related development, Justice Rammohan Reddy, who is hearing petitions by schools challenging the Government scheme and notices of derecognition on Friday, said the primary schools would either have to comply or face the consequences.
