Bhubaneswar: With his attempt to go on a long-distance walkathon foiled by the administration, child marathoner Budhia Singh on Thursday moved the Orissa High Court to challenge the order of Khurda district's Child Welfare Committee (CWC) that restrained him from the venture. Budhia's counsel B.P. Tripathy said the boy and his coach Biranchi Das, through a revision petition, had appealed to the High Court to ask the Government and the Committee, a quasi-judicial body, to stop putting hurdles in the child's emergence as an athlete of promise.
`Arbitrary'
Mr. Tripathy said Budhia being a minor, his coach represented him in the petition. Describing the Committee's ban on Budhia's long-distance walk scheduled for Wednesday as "arbitrary", the petition said the body had never heard the boy on whether he wanted to participate in the walk. "In the process, the Committee has violated the right to the development of Budhia, which is a constitutional right," he argued. The Committee also did not take any step for encouraging the sports activities of Budhia, the petitioner said. The boy did not come under the category of "child in need of protection and care" as per the Juvenile Justice Act. PTI
