Pawar says his party will back UPA candidate
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar on Thursday said that as part of the United Progressive Alliance, his party would support a UPA presidential candidate.
"This is the opinion of a majority of the UPA constituents," Mr. Pawar told media persons on the sidelines of the General Council meeting of the National Cooperative Development Council here.
Mr. Pawar said the Congress should select a candidate and they would support. "We have said so during our meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi."
Mr. Pawar, however, clarified that the UPA constituents should be sounded about the candidate before he/she is declared. "We don't want to hear about the person from you," he told media persons in a lighter vein.
