NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday opened an eight-lane express highway at Yamuna Pushta for traffic from I.T.O. Chungi to Kailash Nagar and laid the foundation stone for an underpass at I.T.O. Chungi and two flyovers at Raja Ram Kohli Marg and Shastri Nagar-Pushta crossing in East Delhi. Speaking at a function that was attended by Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia, Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely and MLA Meera Bhardwaj, the Chief Minister said the upcoming underpass at I.T.O. Chungi would not only provide an effective link between different localities of East Delhi but also serve as an important link between East Delhi and other parts of the Capital. She said the ITO Chungi junction witnesses huge traffic volumes as it is here that the Vikas Marg and Pushta Road intersect. The underpass with four cloverleaves and two slip roads has been planned to provide signal-free movement for traffic at this junction. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.73.70 crore and it would be completed within 18 months. Ms. Dikshit said her Government would strive to develop the entire East Delhi on the lines of New Delhi and South Delhi. The construction of the Commonwealth Games Village would accelerate the pace of development in the region, she said, adding that the Prime Minister had constituted committees to prioritise cleaning and beautification of the Yamuna. The riverbanks on both sides would be developed in a systematic manner to showcase the new face of the river, she said. The new express highway, the Chief Minister said, would reduce travel time from ITO Chungi to Kailash Nagar from 30 minutes to just eight minutes. This would become part of the East Delhi Ring Road and Outer Ring Road and provide fast movement of traffic from Noida to Wazirabad through ITO Chungi Underpass. The express highway has been widened from four lanes to eight lanes towards the Yamuna riverside by constructing an embankment at a cost of Rs.22 crore. The two new flyovers at the Raja Ram Kohli Marg intersection and Shastri Nagar intersection would provide linkage to the disused canal and Geeta Colony Bridge that are in the final stage of completion. These flyovers, costing Rs.215 crore, would be completed within two years and will make the entry and exit points on this major corridor totally signal-free.
