Schools given time till June 14

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday once again directed primary schools in the State to file affidavits stating that they would impart education to students from the first to the fifth standard in the medium of instruction in which they were permitted to operate. The court continued its earlier interim order staying the derecognition of primary schools till June 14.

Justice Rammohan Reddy passed the orders on petitions by schools which had challenged the State's language policy and the voluntary scheme of April 14, 2007 levying penalty on schools that had violated the norms on the medium of instruction. When the matter came up, the Karnataka Private Schools Managements' Association (KUSMA) sought more time to file affidavits, pointing out that it had more than 1,100 members.

The court permitted the association members to file individual affidavits before June 14. When the affidavit, filed by an educational institution from Bangalore came up for hearing, Justice Reddy rejected it saying it did not comply with the April 29 court order. The order had directed the schools to file affidavits stating they would impart education in the language under which they were licensed.
