Mixed reaction to Delimitation plans

Special Correspondent

TDP welcomes proposals, BJP opposes them

  • Move done at instance of YSR, says Dattatreya
  • 7 LS constituencies to be replaced with new ones

HYDERABAD: The Delimitation Commission's notification proposing far-reaching changes in the contours of several Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in the State has evoked mixed reaction from political parties.

While Telugu Desam Legislature Party deputy leader T. Devender Goud welcomed the proposals, BJP president B. Dattatreya termed the delimitation exercise as "unconstitutional and unscientific".

The latter said the move looked like it was done at the instance of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to benefit the ruling party.

CPI MP Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy said the notification was by and large good, but exclusion of Munugode Assembly segment from Nalgonda Lok Sabha constituency was surprising.

While the issue never figured in the public hearings, the notification had Munugode included under proposed Bhongir parliamentary constituency, which he alleged, was done at the behest of Union Minister S. Jaipal Reddy at the last moment.

    `Go ahead'

CPI (M) State Secretariat member Y. V. Rao wanted the Commission to go ahead without further delay as it cannot satisfy all sections.

The notification issued ensured that the number of Assembly and parliamentary constituencies would remain same at 294 and 42 respectively, but 63 Assembly segments and seven Lok Sabha constituencies would be replaced with new ones.

The number of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe segments will go up from 39 to 48 and 15 to 19 respectively.

The new Lok Sabha constituencies will be Zaheerabad, Malkajgiri, Bhongir, Chevella, Mahabubabad, Araku and Vizianagaram in place of Siddipet, Hanamkonda, Miryalaguda, Bhadrachalam, Parvatipuram and Bobilli.
