PANAJI: With an orderly election campaign coming to an end on Thursday evening, Goa is all set for the polling on Saturday to elect its 11th Assembly. Paying tributes to the people and political parties, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ramesh Negi described the campaign as "free of garbage and defacement created by posters and hoardings" and hailed it as a "new electoral process which can serve as a model to the country." The CEO, however, expressed his concern over the "malaise of money" in the election. The EC planned massive patrolling across the State during the 48 hours ahead of polling, and it was also monitoring the likely misuse of liquor. For the first time, 262 booths have been declared sensitive or hypersensitive out of the 1,100 booths in the 40 constituencies.There are a total of 10,10, 207 voters 5,05,625 men and 5,04,582 women.
50 independents in fray
As many as 202 candidates, including 50 independents are in the fray. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded 33 nominees, the ruling Congress-NCP alliance 38, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party 26, the Communist Party of India four, the GSP one, the JD(S)11, the RPI(A) four, the SGF17, the UGDP 11 and the Shiv Sena seven. The number of women candidates is a mere 15 in this State,which boasts of high literacy and education.Counting will take place on June 5 and the election process will end on June 8.
