Next President

This refers to the editorial "Choosing the next President" (May 29). The country is yearning for a President that everyone can look up to — a person who unites people, and who is above considerations of caste, creed, and region. He may or may not have a political background. The President should be someone who upholds the Constitution and has the requisite wisdom and courage to do so.

A. Megha,
Hyderabad

In Abdul Kalam, the nation found an apolitical President. He transformed the sleepy Rashtrapati Bhavan into an active institution. What the country needs is not a ceremonial President but one who can inspire the people to excel in their fields. If political parties can think differently, we can have another people's President.

S. Nallasivan,
Tirunelveli

R. Murali Kumar,
Tiruchi
