Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "Choosing the next President" (May 29). The country is yearning for a President that everyone can look up to a person who unites people, and who is above considerations of caste, creed, and region. He may or may not have a political background. The President should be someone who upholds the Constitution and has the requisite wisdom and courage to do so.
A. Megha,
* * * In Abdul Kalam, the nation found an apolitical President. He transformed the sleepy Rashtrapati Bhavan into an active institution. What the country needs is not a ceremonial President but one who can inspire the people to excel in their fields. If political parties can think differently, we can have another people's President.
S. Nallasivan,
* * * While the process of selecting a candidate has been set in motion, no party has thought of fielding a woman this time. We have had no woman President since India became a republic. Perhaps it is time we had one.
R. Murali Kumar,
