ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Thursday that the report on Kashmir adopted by the European Parliament contained too many "factual inaccuracies" for it to have any value for the efforts to find a solution to the issue. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said even after it was modified through amendments, it left "much to be desired to make it objective and a positive influence to further promote efforts for a just settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute." However, Pakistan has taken satisfaction that the report urged India and Pakistan to continue efforts for a solution along "President of Pakistan's ideas" of self-governance, freedom of movement and demilitarisation. It also pointed out that the report called on India to establish an independent and impartial commission of inquiry into human rights violations in the Valley. The statement said the report contained "numerous factual inaccuracies and extraneous elements that have bearing on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute," which detracted from the objectivity and credibility of the report and "undermined the ability of the European Parliament to play a helpful role." It said the report's criticism of the government's initial handling of the October 2005 earthquake "is belied by facts." Although the statement does not make a mention of this, the report has also included at the last minute the political crisis arising out of the ouster of the chief justice and the May 12 Karachi killings.
