Thanjavur:
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken up conservation work at the Big Temple here at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh.
The work includes replacing a broken and damaged ceiling of northern corridor to a length of 26 metres and repairing a sunken corridor to a length of 65 metres. Official sources said ASI experts were engaged in dismantling the broken and damaged ceiling and they would be replaced soon. As regards the sunken corridor, a new foundation would be laid.
Conservation of northern corridor would be taken up in June at Airavateswaraswamy Temple, Darasuram.
The entire northern corridor would be dismantled and reconstructed. A brick structure found by ASI workers near the moat would be conserved. The workers bumped into it when they dug the ground to construct a toilet.
Electrification of the main temple, Amman temple and the lawn outside Airavateswarasawamy Temple had been taken up by Tourism Department from funds allotted by the Union Tourism Ministry.
The Tamil Nadu Hotel here would be renovated and more facilities provided to devotees at `Navagraha kshetras.'
