Anilkumar in sole lead

Principal Correspondent

KOCHI: After watching former National `A' player N. Abdul Majeed wilt under time pressure, top-seeded O.T. Anilkumar emerged as the lone leader on the penultimate day of the Airtel Kerala State senior chess championship here on Thursday.

Playing white, Majeed, a four-time Kerala champion, offered a draw on the 33rd move.

"But I rejected the offer. And when Majeed ran into time trouble, I had a pawn on the verge of promotion and also enjoyed a two-pawn advantage," said Anilkumar, a three-time State champion.

Anilkumar, a professional chess player and coach, now has 6.5 points from seven rounds.

Half point behind are Thiruvananthapuram's V. Rajith and Pathanamthitta's Binju Oommen.
