WORKMANLIKE: Gael Monfils took advantage of Andy Roddick's mistakes at crucial moments.
Poertschach: American World No. 3 and tournament second seed Andy Roddick crashed out of the Hypo Group International on Thursday, losing 7-5, 6-3 to Frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals. Roddick was broken for the first time in the tournament while serving for the first set at 5-4. Another break by the 75th-ranked Monfils won him the first set. Roddick missed three break points in the first game of the second set, and suffered another break immediately afterward. He then got warned for smashing his racket to the court. Roddick missed two more chances on Monfils' serve at 4-1 down. Monfils had eight aces and was successful with strong forehands and a lot of drop shots from the baseline.
Mauresmo moves up
Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France beat Varvara Lepchenko of Uzbekistan 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg International.
Mirza & Chan rally
Top-seeded Sania Mirza and her Taipei partner Yung-Jan Chan staged a brilliant fightback to reach the doubles semifinals of the Istanbul Cup in Turkey on Thursday. After conceding the opening set, the Indo-Taipei pair rallied to beat the unseeded pair of Sandra Kloesel and Anna Koumantou 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 in a quarterfinal clash. Meanwhile, Patty Schnyder of Switzerland withdrew from the quarterfinal of the Istanbul Cup because of a thigh injury, cutting short her last warmup tournament before Roland Garros.
